Inquiry-Based Teaching in Life Sciences

2.1. Why is it important to reflect on our implementations?

Consult the self-reflection tool presented above and select 1-2 questions which you think are particularly important to yourself and your classroom practice. Share them with your colleagues in this Padlet, expressing also WHY you think they are important!

Did you make predictions based on your ideas?
Did you propose explanations for your results?
These questions are important to me, because they indicate processes that help students reflect on their hypotheses and verify them.

How important do you think are the following ideas when implementing inquiry-based teaching in the classroom?

  1. How can you motivate your students at the beginning of the class?
  2. What can be the reason for equipment not being written in the lab record?
  3. Why should students start with tasks 2 – 3 – 4?
Curiosizing students is definitely a positive approach and that's what the teacher does in this video. The elements necessary for the investigation are not listed because they have already been prepared in class, the food on two tables that students can go and watch, the reagents are presented directly by the teacher. They begin to answer questions 2, 3 and 4 so that they can make assumptions.

  1. What was the teacher's role while students worked?
  2. What was the students' role during their work?
Students are free to move around the classroom and freely perform their experiments by choosing the necessary material. The teacher is a simple observer (he is absent in the video)

  1. What can you say about the activity evaluation (from the point of view of general study-skills and later Chemistry)?
  2. What do you think about students‘ hypotheses? Would the hypotheses of your students be different?
I think the students have achieved good skills. One of them admits that he learned to coordinate his classmates. Compared to their initial hypotheses, after experimentation, they realize the mistake and acquire knowledge that they will not forget. I don't know if my students would have made the same hypotheses, but I think so.

  1. Why do you think it’s important that students were asked to make their own general conclusion from video/text?
It is important to understand whether the objectives set have really been achieved.

  1. What was the aim of the final revision?
The aim is to verify whether all students have actually understood the purpose of the experiment.

Analysis of classroom implementations – 3rd Example

What did you think of the activities and the strategies employed by the teachers? What did you find useful? What can you use with your students?

The activities presented make the students feel like real scientists and help them understand the importance of collecting data to evaluate the assumptions made. They are a bit difficult to make for the necessary tools that are typical of a scientific laboratory.
